BIOGRAPHY Born in 1985 in Humenné, Slovakia, Tomas Picha studied painting at the Faculty of Arts in Košice. His other interests include manipulated photography TOMAS and video art. During his studies in Košice he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Poland, for a study visit. He has exhibited his work several times PICHA in Slovakia, Poland and London. Trough his art, he seeks to focus on social problems related to mass media, such as fake idols (Contemporary Barbie), the artifcial cult of beauty (Beauty fabric) and consumption (Chewing culture; Breakfast for champions). Some of his other works are more surreal (Lights of Suburbia; Under surface; PLAY) or philosophical (Substitution of forms) in nature, but they are still fgurative scenes inspired by pop art and advertising visuals, with a pinch of humour that is characteristic of his works. www.tomaspicha.com title: ARTIST STATEMENT NIGHTSHIFT Te shape of the suit inspired me to paint bat wings on the sleeves as a sign of freedom, mystery and wilderness. Te central theme is an extraordinary technique: wolf-like ‘lighthouse’ with a ray of light shining from within. Acrylic painting ACRYLIC AND TEXTILE on the body suit shows a sea bay on a starry night, symbolising the patronage of the EU. Tere is no sea in Slovakia, but to me the sea as a visual element MARKERS represents potential. Our country, as an EU Member State, obviously has a great deal of potential: culture, beautiful natural landscapes and numerous signifcant historic sites. Te main theme of this piece is solidarity. European fellowship could be perceived as a light in the dark for our country, while Slovakia can in turn provide support to Europe. FAI INSPIRATION Inspired in the Jarmok festivities which proudly maintain popular art, and which proudly present the most popular singers and musical groups.
